Program Commitments

“We aim to provide all learners with a diverse, interesting and fun set of learning experiences. It is likely that what you get from PCHR will be in direct proportion to your level of engagement. As such, we strongly encourage all learners to communicate and interact regularly with their peers, cluster conveners and PCHR staff.”

For Academic Learners:

The activities of PCHR are organized and governed by two sets of policies and procedures. The first are set by the University of British Columbia and our funder, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The second have been created, and agreed on, by the PCHR Steering Council.

UBC & CIHR POLICIES/PROCEDURES REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

  • You must be a full-time graduate student in an accredited university during your time with PCHR. If you change your status to less than full-time or if you graduate, Management must be informed.
  • You must inform Management of any changes in your award funding. If you receive additional funding and your PCHR funding ceases, you are still required to complete all PCHR activities agreed upon in accepting this award. You are required to acknowledge the support of PCHR and its funders) in all PCHR-related publications or presentations.

  • By November 30th 2008, you must complete the Tutorial for the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (http://www.pre.ethics.gc.ca/english/tutorial/), and forward your certificate to PCHR Management.

  • You are required annually to apply for external funding to replace your award from PCHR (e.g., CIHR, Michael Smith Foundation). If successful, the PCHR funding will cease once alternate funding begins. If the amount of the external funding is less than that offered by the PCHR, the external funding will be supplemented by PCHR to the PCHR base level.

THE PCHR STEERING COUNCIL ALSO REQUIRES ALL LEARNERS TO MEET THE FOLLOWING PROGRAM OBLIGATIONS:

  • Academic Learners are expected to devote 10 hours per week to PCHR activities (unless otherwise approved in advance by your Cluster Co-Conveners and the PCHR Director). [Thesis work and course work is considered independent of the time commitment to the PCHR training program.]

  • At the start of your appointment, you are expected to attend PCHR Orientation Day.

  • You will be asked to summarize your learning expectations in a brief Learner Profile. This Profile must be sent to PCHR Management by November 30th 2008.

  • By the end of your tenure with the program you are required to complete an annual Learner History Form, and meet with the PCHR Director and one of your Co-Conveners to sign off on the form. This form is to be submitted to PCHR Management at the end of your time with PCHR.

  • You are asked to submit a brief report and make a presentation for any event(s) attended during your tenure for which PCHR provides funding (as per the Guidelines for Additional Funding).

  • All learners are required to attend the Cluster Project Presentation Day.

  • You are required to reside in the Greater Vancouver area during your tenure with PCHR. Any changes require prior approval from the Director.

  • Prior approval is required from PCHR for any situation involving transfer of training, or leave of absence. PCHR Management must be informed of any leaves of more than 2 weeks.

  • Thirty days written notice to the PCHR Management Team is required if you decide to withdraw from the PCHR training program.
  • The PCHR Management Team is authorized to terminate your position, with thirty days written notice, if you do not adhere to this letter of offer.

Within the context of the above requirements, PCHR aims to provide all learners with a diverse set of learning experiences, including:

1. Interaction(s) between the two clusters.

2. Interaction(s) within cluster meetings

3. Time spent in engaging with community stakeholders

4. Research, including data gathering and analysis, related to cluster project

5. Preparing posters and publications

6. Attendance at conferences, workshops

7. Completing required learner reports and presentations

PCHR encourages learners to strive to achieve a balanced approach to their participation in self-directed, cluster-level, and cross-cluster activities. We also recognize that learners cannot participate fully in all aspects of all of the above seven categories.

Learners are required to keep their cluster and PCHR management informed if they are unable to attend a planned activity or comply with specific cluster or program requests.

For Postdoctoral Fellows:

The activities of PCHR are organized and governed by two sets of policies and procedures. The first are set by the University of British Columbia, and our funder, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The second have been created, and agreed on by the PCHR Steering Council.

UBC & CIHR POLICIES/PROCEDURES REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING:

  • As a new employee of the University of British Columbia, you are required to present to your department original documentation to confirm (1) your identity and (2) completion of your [PhD or MD], and (3) your eligibility to be employed in Canada (i.e. a valid social insurance number and, if applicable, supporting documentation from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC)). It is your responsibility to ensure that you are legally entitled, pursuant to CIC’s requirements, to work at UBC. If you are not a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, please visit the Faculty Relations’ website http://www.hr.ubc.ca/faculty_relations/immigration/foreignacademics.html

- One day per week on career development activities of your choice;

- Two days per week on research cluster activities including regular attendance at cluster meetings, and assisting with mentorship of other learners;

- Two days per week on PCHR program activities including:

      • Taking a lead role in Learner Profiles
      • Assist with the new proposals
      • Program Evaluation
      • Summer Institute
      • Assist with grant writing

  • At the start of your appointment, you are expected to attend PCHR Orientation Day.

  • You will be asked to summarize your learning expectations in a brief Learner Profile, and provide leadership in mentoring other learners in the creation of their LPs. These profiles must be sent to PCHR Management by November 30th 2008.

  • By the end of your tenure with the program you are required to complete an annual Learner History Form, and meet with the PCHR Director and one of your Co-Conveners to sign off on the form. This form is to be submitted to PCHR Management at the end of your time with PCHR.

UBC & CIHR POLICIES AND PROCEDURES/REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

  • You must have a full time (80% time or more) position in a community health related job. If you change your status to less than this, PCHR management must be notified.
  • You are required to acknowledge the support of PCHR and its funders in all PCHR-related publications or presentations.
  • By November 30th 2008, you must complete the Tutorial for the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (http://www.pre.ethics.gc.ca/english/tutorial/), and forward your certificate to PCHR Managemen
THE PCHR STEERING COUNCIL ALSO REQUIRES ALL LEARNERS TO MEET THE FOLLOWING PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Community Learners are expected to devote one day per week (7.0 or 7.5 hour) to PCHR activities (unless otherwise approved in advance by your Cluster Co-Conveners and the PCHR Director).[Your one day per week with PCHR cannot include work which you would ordinarily already be doing in the normal course of your employment.]
  • At the start of your appointment, you are expected to attend PCHR Orientation Day.
  • You will be asked to summarize your learning expectations in a brief Learner Profile. This Profile must be sent to PCHR Management by November 30th 2008.
  • By the end of your tenure with the program you are required to complete an annual Learner History Form, and meet with the PCHR Director and one of your Co-Conveners to sign off on the form. This form is to be submitted to PCHR Management at the end of your time with PCHR.
