Additional PCHR Funding Guidelines
On December 4, 2006, the PCHR Steering Council approved the creation of a $1,500.00 Individual Learner Education/Enhancement Fund, and a $10,000.00 Learner Engagement/Training Fund. Details of the guidelines as determined by PCHR Management are outlined below.
Preamble
The intent of both funds is twofold:
- To enhance and share learner skills and knowledge
- To provide opportunities for learners that enhance the aims of the PCHR program
$1,500.00 Individual Learner Education/Enhancement Fund
All learners have access to an individual $1,500.00 fund to use over their PCHR tenure. The fund is available for conferences, workshops/seminars, and additional training to enhance the skill set of learners in keeping with the aims of the program.
Pre-approval is required by the program Directors (Jim Frankish) via an email request. The request for approval must demonstrate how the proposed activity will contribute to the learner’s PCHR learning objectives.
Learners who utilize these funds are required to present their experience to either their cluster group or a learner gathering. The intent is that the overall program will benefit from sharing in the learning.
Additionally, a short, informal written report to the PCHR Management Team is required within one month of the event/experience, with the knowledge that MT may post the report on the PCHR website.
It is UBC Policy that for any activities/expenditures which require reimbursement by the university, original receipts are mandatory.

$10,000.00 Learner Engagement/Training Fund
A fund of $10,000.00 is available, in any program year, for distribution upon written approved application, for individual learners, or groups of learners, and mentors, to enhance the goals of PCHR training/learning. Applications are submitted to and approved by the Directors (Jim Frankish).
For example, the funds may be used to bring in academic or community mentors to provide a learning event for the PCHR program and its partners. Other activities which apply are:
- Participation in learning activities, i.e. Credit or non-credit courses, workshops, summer institutes, etc.
- Seminars/workshops/group activities organized on behalf of the program which are aligned with PCHR goals and focus
- Invite special speakers that enhance collaborative learning
- Presenting PCHR activities at conferences aligned with the aims of PCHR
Applications can be made by mentors, individual learners or groups during their PCHR tenure.
Applications must include:
- Title of the event and description
- Rationale for funding
- Target audience (if applicable)
- Expected outcomes
- Dates involved
- Amount of funds requested, including breakdown of costs
A follow up written report to PCHR Management within one month of the event/experience is required, with approval to post on the PCHR Website.
It is UBC Policy that for any activities/expenditures which require reimbursement by the university, original receipts are mandatory.
The Learner Engagement/Training Fund will be available as of March 1, 2007. Please note that group proposals/applications are strongly encouraged, and are given top priority. Any remaining balance in this fund will not be carried forward to the next program year. A call for proposals/applications will be sent out in November, February, and May of each program year, to all PCHR participants.
Criteria Used by PCHR Management in Decision Making:
- Group application requests are capped at $3,000.00
- Individual application (one-time onl) requests are capped at $1,500.00
- Applications must demonstrate a benefit to the program as a whole
- Applicants are encouraged to include involvement of community partners
NOTE: All applications received by PCHR Management will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, with the recognition that funds are limited. Final decisions will be made by the Director.
